VANOS symptoms

The S62 engine in particular, found in the E39 M5 (1999-2003) and Z8 models was actually rather robust and a complete failure of the unit is almost unheard of. The scaremongering from forums, buyers guides and the like is usually unfounded as the system is broken down into just a few key components that have scope for failure.

The most common story you will hear is of a “diesel” rattle that is worse for a few seconds upon initial startup (especially a hot engine). This DOES NOT mean you have a non-functioning VANOS or one that is on its way out. It is simply the tolerances of very robust internal components being less than when new, specifically the axial play in the piston bearings. That can be silenced by our rattle repair service.

Upgrading the internals of the VANOS unit itself restore near silent running. Replacement of the full unit is rarely necessary. There is a chance the rattling you are hearing could be caused by timing chain/tensioner wear, so it is best to have a mechanic confirm the VANOS is at fault before jumping to conclusions.

When it comes to the actual performance, driveablilty and correct running of the car, the issue 9 times out of 10 is the VANOS solenoids. Easily removed from the very front of the engine, it will take a mechanical novice no more than 30 minutes with an allen key and some adjustable domestic water pump pliers.

Regarding the effect a faulty solenoid board will have on your car, you may have experienced one or all of the following symptoms:

The S54 3.2 liter inline 6-cylinder found in the E46 M3, Z3M and Z4M Coupe and Roadsters, comes with a variety of potential issues and remedies.

As with the S62 V8, a lot of complaints for the S54 VANOS center around noise. Again, we can complete a rattle repair on your unit - however there is also the possibility that your cam sprocket bolts have come loose, which can cause terminal catastrophic engine damage if left unchecked.

If you have a fault code(s) relating to the solenoid pack that fits to the bottom of the VANOS unit, we can supply a fully rebuilt unit which can be fitted with the VANOS unit still in situ.

S85 V10 + S65 V8

Throttle actuator rebuild. Common fault causing gradually more frequent limp mode occurrences. Fault codes will be either 2B15 – Throttle Valve Actuator Bank 1’ and/or 2B16 – Throttle Valve Actuator Bank 2.

Great experience and service with VANOS clinic. Communication was perfect and accommodated us well over a weekend that suited us while they removed and refitted at their workshop. Our E39 M5 is driving like a dream after the vanos was repaired by them. Zahid Malik
After a botch repair from another company on my M5 solenoids, VANOS clinic managed to resurrect them - 1000 miles in and not missed a beat! Brian Malone
